Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019: Episode IX Panel

Surprising no one, Celebration Chicago kicked off on Friday morning, April 12, with the most anticipated panel of the convention: Episode IX. The Celebration Stage and both overflow stages filled to capacity; fans also watched the panel at the Star Wars Show Live Stage on the exhibit hall floor or the YouTube livestream. As expected, the panel concluded with the teaser trailer for the film, which ended to reveal the movie’s title: The Rise of Skywalker.

Coffee With Kenobi

Friend of Coffee With Kenobi, Brian Sims, is sharing some of the photos he took during Star Wars Celebration Chicago. Even if you were in attendance, there are still plenty of things you could have missed. After all, you can’t see everything! For those who had to sit this one out, these photos give you a good look at some of the fun and exciting things that happened over the course of those five days — Including all the cosplay, the Episode IX panel and title reveal for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the 20th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace, and a look back at the first season, plus a sneak peek at the second season, of Star Wars Resistance.

About the time summer fades into fall in Southern California absolutely nothing changes, we still have the same great weather and the palm trees don’t change color. So, while the rest of the nation marks the season change and cooler weather, San Diego hosts the largest military air show in the United States as the city kicks off Fleet Week.

Time again for STAR WARS WEEKLY, the SYFY WIRE series that rounds up the most important news of the week from a galaxy far, far away. Think of us as your own personal Star Wars Holocron.

The Mary Sue

Yesterday was a big day for fans of actress/Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein. The San Diego Comic-Con day began with Eckstein on a panel for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which brought the big reveal that the beloved series was returning for another season. Later that evening, she brought fashion back into fandom for the fifth annual Her Universe Fashion Show, where 24 designers competed for the chance to design an Avengers 4-inspired line, to debut next spring.

Thursday evening of San Diego Comic Con 2018 brought the self-proclaimed biggest version of the Her Universe Fashion Show yet in celebration of the event’s 5th anniversary. In a ballroom of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel fans packed in to see models displaying the Destination Disney collection designed by last year’s winners, a presentation of the new Star Wars: The Clone Wars 10th Anniversary line that featured appearances by voice actors Matt Lanter and Dee Bradley Baker, a segment where fans got to walk the runway, and a special surprise materialization of Doctor Who’s new 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

Brian Sims, photographer and friend of Coffee With Kenobi, has once again shared some of his images from San Diego Comic-Con. For the first time, Disneyland Star Wars Nite ignited the passions of West Coast fans. Until now, Disney’s Star Wars Weekends and then Galactic Nights were always a special Florida treat in the magic of Walt Disney World.  Disneyland attendees had to travel across the country or miss out on this Disney Star Wars experience.  All that changed on May 3rd, when Disneyland Star Wars Nite celebrated Star Wars Day (May the 4th) with a sold-out Disneyland After-Dark special ticketed event.  Continue reading for a photoblog of this inaugural experience.

Our good buddy Brian Sims was fortunate enough to attend Star Wars Nite last night at Disneyland in Anaheim, and even more fortunately for us he took some of his always awesome photo’s and has kindly shared them with us.

Loscon 44 was held last weekend, November 24-26, 2017 in Los Angeles. This convention has traditionally been focused on science fiction and fantasy literature. But this year it was headed by Craig Miller, whose resume includes Lucasfilm Head of Fan Relations back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. This means he lead the Star Wars Fan Club and wrote the now-classic newsletter – Bantha Tracks.

On Saturday November 4th, members of Rancho Obi-Wan and Star Wars fans from across the globe gathered in Petaluma, California for the 6th annual Rancho Obi-Wan Gala. For those not familiar, Rancho Obi-Wan is a California nonprofit, and home to the world’s largest collection of Star Wars memorabilia and artifacts. This year’s Gala celebrating 40 Years of Star Wars collecting again highlighted founder Steve Sansweet’s amazing collection, the world’s largest privately-owned Star Wars collection. Friend of Coffee With Kenobi Brian Sims attended Salt Lake Comic-Con this past weekend and has been generous enough to share a few highlights from the event, along with loads of awesome images. Couldn’t be there? This could be the next best thing.

Check out Brian’s recap below:

As a fan of Star Wars, a trip to Salt Lake Comic Con needs to be on your list of to do items. Still small enough to have the opportunity to get in to almost every panel you want, yet big enough to pull in top names in the Star Wars community. The quality of programming for the panels was top notch. In almost all of the panels, the subject was engaging and left you satisfied, wanting more. Salt Lake Comic Con is the one you want to go to if you want intelligent Star Wars conversation by panelists with a high Star Wars IQ. It is not built around a breaking news or product reveals circus. A refreshing and enjoyable convention, add it to your list!

“A Jedi in the Streets”: Mark Hamill Honored with a Street Sign in Clairemont, California

As if becoming a Disney Legend wasn’t an exalted enough honor for our favorite Jedi, Mark Hamill has had a street named after him in Clairemont, California, which is a suburb of San Diego. Well, okay, his name is ‘honorary’ (the official street name, Castleton Drive, remains) and, as he put it, he’s [Hamill] “kinda’ on probation”. Let’s *ahem* hope his actions in The Last Jedi don’t warrant the dissolution of Mark Hamill Drive.

San Diego Recognizes Mark Hamill by Naming a Street in His Honor [Photos]

Yesterday was Mark Hamill Day in San Diego! The legendary actor, who brought life to Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, was recognized for his achievements with a street named in his honor. Friend of Coffee With Kenobi Brian Sims was on hand to cover the event. He has graciously provided commentary on the day, along with a bit of history for context, and some amazing photographs of the honoree, his family, and the many fans who were on had to celebrate.

Mark Hamill had a San Diego street named after him Sunday. Castleton Drive, where he lived briefly in middle and high school, now has a second name: Mark Hamill Dr. Brian Sims also attended and has generously shared some of his pics with a few fan sites. See some below, and even more at

Mark Hamill Drive Named In San Diego

Despite the fact that he really should have an entire continent named after him, the good people of San Diego have seen fit to name a street after the one and only Luke Skywalker.

With great thanks to our pal Brian Sims, here’s a look at this amazing day.

San Diego Celebrates Mark Hamill and Names Street for Star Wars Actor

Sunday, July 30, 2017 was Mark Hamill day in the Clairemont community of San Diego, California as a street was named after the legendary Star Wars actor.  “I’m humbled and so touched by the kindness of the people from my old neighborhood in Clairemont who made it happen. I’ve always loved San Diego and lived some of the happiest years of my life there. To have their support means the world to me,” stated Mark Hamill.  Take a look at how San Diego’s NFL team leaving crossed paths with an actor from a galaxy far far away.

Every year, designers from various backgrounds come together to compete in San Diego Comic-Con’s Her Universe Fashion Show, an event popularly known for showcasing wild amounts of creativity. Geek inspired garments are sent down the runway, where they are evaluated by an experienced panel of judges and an audience with an eye for talent.

San Diego Comic-Con’s Thursday night was marked by the 4th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show. And while I couldn’t attend in person I did have an entertaining time hopping around Twitter, Periscope, and Instagram in an attempt to catch all the action as it was happening.
