Mark Hamill Day in San Diego for Honorary Mark Hamill Drive unveiling

How San Diego's NFL team leaving and an actor from a galaxy far far away crossed paths. The January 12th announcement that the NFL Chargers were packing up and moving to Los Angles set in motion the events that brought us to today's naming of “Mark Hamill Drive.”

Located in Chris Cate's 6th District is a street named Charger Blvd., a street many believed was named after the NFL team of the same name. As public outrage started to build and the process of "cleaning" San Diego of anything Charger related begun residents of the Clairemont neighborhood came up with the idea of renaming Charger Blvd. to something for the Star Wars actor Mark Hamill who grew up in the same area. Hamill lived on Castleton Drive in Clairemont in the '60s and attended Hale Junior High and James Madison High.

With support from Councilman Chris Cate the idea took hold and formal plans developed to honor the actor.

On June 20th, the City Council voted to honor the actor as part of the city’s honorary street naming program and “Mark Hamill Drive” became official.

July 30th 2017 was officially declared Mark Hamill Day by a proclamation from the city council.

Mark showed up today with his family, his wife Marilou, daughter Chelsea, sons Griffin and Nathan. Even family dogs Millie & Mabel made the trip.

Today's event was hosted by Lisa Remillard of KUSI News. Also attending were Chris Cate, City of San Diego Council Member for District 6 and Eden Yaege, Clairemont Town Council, President

Helping Mark on the unveiling of the street sign was Lieutenant Grubbs of the San Diego Police Department.

After the media Q & A, Mark took to the stage again for a few more pictures and he literally sat down to sign autographs for the fans that were on hand.
